President’s Message February 2022

Dear FIWAL Friends,

I trust that you have had a good start to 2022. With Covid restrictions lifted, we can now plan, organize and attend events again.

Hopefully, Dateline will again fill up with exciting events for 2022. Lynn Assadi, who heads the FIWAL Events team, has been hard at work rescheduling FIWAL’s event for this coming year. We have had to adjust some dates to accommodate these changes. The FIWAL concert, “A Celebration of Women in Music”, is now scheduled for 4thMarch 2022 to mark International Women’s Day. This will be such a special occasion and we are thrilled to be working with FIWAL members, the Ukrainian Cultural Association and the Barcarolle Choir.  This event is open to all FIWAL Member associations and their guests so do bring your family and friends as it will be a fun evening with plenty to celebrate.

We have also decided to combine the FIWAL Spring Lunch with our AGM which is on 7thJune 2022.  This will allow us, finally, to have a ‘face to face’ AGM after two years and give us the chance to socialize as well.  As usual, the AGM will be for invited FIWAL Member reps but the lunch will be open to all FIWAL Member associations.  We are anticipating a good turnout, so do Save the Date!

It was wonderful to see so many at our last Member rep Zoom get together.  Thanks to our Membership officer, Mary Jane Eckert, these sessions have been a great success and it is very useful to have your feedback and input.  We are learning so much more about each other’s associations and how we can support and help each other. Meanwhile, I am looking forward to seeing you again at the FIWAL Board meeting on 8thFebruary.

The good news is that travel is slowly getting easier which hopefully will mean that more of us can make long awaited journeys across the world to see loved ones.  I was delighted to read about the achievement of nineteen year old Zara Rutherford who became the youngest woman to fly solo around the world.  One of her main aims was to ensure greater visibility for women in aviation as only 5.1% of airline pilots are women.  She was also raising funds for ‘Girls who Code’ and ‘Dreams Soar’ – two charities that help girls enter computer and STEM fields. What a wonderful role model for young girls everywhere!

Gong XI Fa Cai to everyone that celebrates the Lunar New Year – wishing you and your family good fortune and health in the Year of the Tiger!

Warm wishes,
Zehan Albakri
